Our Description

What’s the aim of ‘Books for All’?
The aim is for every homeless and disadvantaged person living in Canberra to have the opportunity to own or borrow a book for free.

Why Books?
Books provide a wide degree of services especially that of enjoyment, knowledge, escapism and discussion.

Why here in Canberra?
Canberra, the Nation’s Capital is often regarded as a wealthy city however there are many homeless and disadvantaged members living in the community.

-Canberra has the highest portion of young people (under the age of 25) who are homeless- over 800 people.
-Nearly 300 are under the age of 12 – that’s 22 per cent of all homeless in the ACT and nearly twice the national average of 12 per cent.
-There are more than 1,300 Canberrans who are considered homeless and more than 30,000 people living beneath the poverty line. (Facts taken from Barnados 2009)

It’s important to remember that when someone is considered ‘homeless’ they don’t necessarily live on the streets- some live in hotels, temporary accommodation or sleep on friends couches.

Where and when will ‘Books for All’ occur?
Tuesday afternoons at the Griffin Centre, Genge St, Civic. (Days may increase if service is popular).

What can I do to help?
Donate any books you no longer want and if you’re not in the Canberra community please just spread the word! They can be novels, kid’s books, magazines, comics & so forth. (Please keep any offensive or pornographic books to yourself though!)

Where can I donate books?
I'm currently organising collection bins to be placed at the three locations in the Canberra city area. Please hold onto your books until further notice.
